Harlech Castle stands near the coast on a bluff of rock and looks magnificent in its setting. It remains in good condition, having been designed by the military architect Master James of St George. He was able to create a castle of great strength to suit the defensive requirements of the age and combine this with a sense of magnificence with great beauty of line and form.
Harlech Castle was once part of an Iron Ring of castles surrounding the coastal fringes of Snowdonia, stretching from Flint all the way around the Welsh coast to Aberystwyth. This was a ring intended to prevent the region from ever becoming a focal point of insurrection, and a last bastion of resistance.
