Llyn Celyn is a large reservoir which was built in 1961 in the Tryweryn valley. Building the reservoir meant flooding the village of Capel Celyn, which caused local outrage, as this village was a stronghold of Welsh culture. Its purpose was to provide water to Liverpool and parts of the Wirral, rather than to Wales.
