The village of Betws-y-Coed was named after the Prayer House in the Wood, which is what Betws-y-Coed means. This is St Michael's church, dating back to the Celtic Church era before the Norman conquest, and restored in the 14th century. This is the oldest building in Betws and is located on the banks of the River Conwy.
The church receives hundreds of visitors each year, from all over the world. It is of particular interest to students of architecture who learn much from the inside arrangements of the church. Services are held at the church each St Michael's Day (29th September) and there is a candle-lit Carol Service each Christmas tide.
Every September a Flower Festival is held at the church.
