Sir Wiiliams-Ellis acquired the site upon which Portmeirion is built in 1925 when it was but a neglected wilderness, and used his architectural expertise to convert it into an Italian renaissance village standing on a promentory overlooking the North Wales sea coast. The village is open to viewing by the public upon payment of a small entrance fee. As well as a vast collection of houses and artifacts there are shops and restaurants.
